OK.So you just adopted a rabbit and it is your first one.And suddenly you have all kind of questions on your mind about pet rabbit care. This article will answer the most common ones that everyone wonder about pet rabbit care.

What do pet rabbits eat?

Rabbits would eat just about anything so be careful what you give them. They need to have Timothy hay at will and some Timothy based pellets every day but not more than a quarter of a cup daily. Also give them a handful of greens daily such as spinach, parsley, broccoli and celery.Fruits should be given in moderation as treats.Never give them cereal bars, salty or sugary snacks, nuts or corn.

Should you give a pet rabbit to a child?

Most of the times rabbits are given as easter gifts to young children.Unfortunately, kids loose interest in the rabbit after a few weeks and it is unrealistic to expect them to handle the care. This is the reason why most rabbits ended up at animal shelters.Only adults are able to fully understand the animal needs and should be the primary care giver for the rabbit.Children may dislike the fact that the bunny wont play with them like a dog or a cat.

Can pet rabbits be kept outside?

Unlike what most people think, domestic rabbits are much better off inside rather than outside.Outdoors rabbits are not doing well in wet, cold or hot temperatures. They can overheat very easily. Also predators such as cats, dogs, pray birds or raccoons can scare them to death just by being around them. They will be prone to diseases and fly bites and their life expectancy will be greatly reduced.Limited space and boredom will make their life miserable.

Does a pet rabbit smells and makes a mess in the house?

Rabbits are very clean and tidy animals. They can easilt be litter trained like a cat when they are spayed or neutered. They also clean themselves like cats and their fur smells nice.Get a good absorbent litter made of recycled newspaper and scoop out the litter box every other day and you will never have urine odors in your house.Stay away from scented wood chips that can be toxic for the rabbit.

How much does pet rabbit care cost?

If you were told that rabbits are low cost maintenance pets, you will soon find out the opposite.A pet rabbit cost as much to care for than a cat or a dog. They need to be spayed or neutered and to be taken to the vet once a year.Food ,hay, litter and vegetables costs slowly but surely add up to.You also need to find a vet that is specialised in rabbits, not just dogs and cats.

Care of Pet Turtles Made Simple

Posted by admin on 27th October 2010

Turtles are wonderful pets that can live 25 years or more when they get the proper care. Pet turtles need special care that enables them to be healthy and live longer. Fortunately, once you know how to care for your tortoise, it really doesn’t take very long. Expect to take about 30 minutes a day.

Before adopting a pet turtle, researching the many pet species to choose from is recommended. Know that different turtles species can require more personal care; requiring more detailed housing needs, special diets and environments. For example, snapping turtles are more aggressive and soft shell turtles are more vulnerable to impure water and damage from rocks. For those with no experience taking care of turtles, red eared sliders and Russian tortoises make a good hardy turtle to start with. Make sure to check the laws in your states before buying a turtle, because of the risk of salmonella, turtles less than 4 inches are illegal to sell. Keeping red eared sliders as pets are also regulated in some areas.

The first step to proper turtle care is creating an environment for your pet. Turtles placed indoors will need at least a 40 gallon tank. This allows enough room for creating a wet and dry area for your pet with enough space to move around and exercise. Know that as your pet increases in size you may need to purchase a larger aquarium. Besides glass aquariums, large rubber tubs work well for housing turtles. The water in your tank should be six inches or more, making it deep enough for your pet to swim in. Because chlorine and fluoride are present in tap water, it is not suitable for your turtle’s drinking water. Instead, use natural spring water.

The usual way to create a proper environment is to have your tank have 75% water and 25% dry land. Using large flat stones in your dry area will enable your turtle to have a basking area that allows your turtle to fully dry off. A curved log is one way to help your turtle easily climb out of the water and make it to the dry area of the tank. Though tank decorations are not required, you may want to add some to add aesthetic value. If you decide to do this, make certain that any live plants added are not harmful to your turtle as well as skip using any item that has pointed or sharp edges.

Store the tank in a low traffic, quiet area of your house. A new turtle might be stressed out by being in a new environment and may be shy and retreat when people enter the room. Heating your aquarium will help keep your turtles active as they are cold blooded. Usually a constant temperature of approximately 80 degrees Fahrenheit will enable them from getting slower, though some species need a warmer climate. An ultraviolet light can be used during the day, to help your turtle absorb essential Vitamin D3 needed to utilize calcium. The ultraviolet light should be turned off at night to indicate the end of the day, and help your pet keep a consistent schedule. Even with ultraviolet light, your pet turtle will still require regular exposure to direct sunlight.

A heavy duty filtration unit will be needed to keep the tank clean and fecal matter should be removed from the tank as soon as it appears for the same reason. For prevention of fungus, you can add ¼ cup of table salt for each five gallons of water. Simply changing ten percent of the water each week helps maintain a much cleaner environment. Even with regular maintenance, periodically you should remove your turtle and all items in the tank for a thorough cleaning. White vinegar can be used to clean the inside of the tank and the filter can be cleaned with water, no chemicals should be used when cleaning your pet’s aquarium.

Though small turtles need to feed every day adult turtles should only be feed several times a week. The diet for turtles varies depending on species but most turtles are omnivores and a variety should be given to help your pet get the proper nutrition to stay in good health. Turtles can consume cooked chicken, low fat dog food, earthworms, fish, leafy green vegetables and fruits. Because turtles are messy eaters feeding in a separate container, will help keep the tank clean.

Turtles have sharp teeth and can bite, so be careful when sticking your hand into your turtle’s aquarium or handling them by hand. Being careful to wash your hands after taking care of your pet turtle is highly recommended due to the bacterial risk.

Young children should not be allowed to handle pet turtles without adult supervision. Though turtles make great pets, it is advisable not not have them if you have children less than 5 years old.

Turtles are great friends. Show your love with animal jewelry so others can enjoy your pet too.

Basic Pet Bird Care

Posted by admin on 8th October 2010

Birds kept as pets should have the proper treatment for it to live healthy. Lots of things are to be considered upon deciding to have birds as pets. Choosing the right type of bird for you is crucial and the type of environment you ought to build for the animal is also important. Pet birds are almost always kept in cages. The owner must make sure that the cage is not too small for the bird/s and accessories must be present for feeding and recreational purposes.

The first thing to consider about caring for birds would be its proper nutrition. In the wild, birds feed on nectar, insects, leaves and other available food that is fit for their kind. Birds in cages should be fed with a balance of commercial and natural diet. Bird seeds are most ideal for supplement and intake. Water is also important.

Bird cages should be placed in areas where the distribution of sunlight, fresh air and humidity is equal. An owner must also make sure that there is enough shade for the bird to rest. Sudden change of temperature may harm the bird since it needs to adapt before it can be considered to be ready for transfer.

It is recommended that the largest cage that can be accommodated by the house should be chosen. The cage must be durable enough to tolerate damage which will be done by the bird. It should not have toxic components because the bird will be sure to gnaw on the rails. The cage, if possible should be wider than higher to promote wing stretching.

Perches should also be pesticide free. Commercial perches made of wood are ideal. A perch’s main function is to keep the bird away from their droppings, their tails from the water and other hygiene related issues to keep the bird healthy.

Food bowls should be wide and shallow rather than the deep and small cups. This type of food container makes the bird see what it will be eating and there are greater chances of it being attracted to the sight of food which may be beneficial to its health.

Newspapers, paper towels and plain cage liners should be used rather than wood chips or sand so that the droppings will be seen for monitoring and health purposes. A screen should separate the bird from the liners to prevent it from contamination. Daily cleaning routine of the bird cage and its accessories should be done to avoid food spoilage and disease.

Birds are intelligent animals. Their psychology needs an active attention. Therefore it would be advisable for the cage to be placed near family activity areas. Toys are also encouraged to promote play. One thing to be cautious about selecting bird toys is that the materials should be chewable to avoid choking.

Different Ways Your Child Can Take Care Of Your Pet

Posted by admin on 7th September 2010

Many people hold the belief that every child needs a dog. Though this article is not about the benefits of dogs to children, it is about how children can help dogs. When children are young, they often express a desire to their mommies that they want to help. They want to be a big kid and help mom with the dishes, the laundry, and even taking care of the dog! Here are a few ways children can help care for the family pet.

First and foremost, it is important to know the age appropriateness of tasks for children as they are related to caring for their pets. Toddlers are often very willing to help, but partly because of their size, and mainly due to their age, they simply cannot help the way “big kids” can. So, how can toddlers help? They can help feed and water the dog. Simply get two plastic cups, divide your dog’s dinner portion between the two cups. Take your toddler to the food bowl and show them how to pour the food into the dish. Then go ahead and do the same thing with the water. Young children love this, and they really feel like they are helping mommy! Also, if your toddler is gentle enough, you can hand them a doggie brush and they can help you groom your dog’s coat. Taking the dog on walks with the stroller is also an excellent way your child can help.

For children who are still young, mainly from about 4 to 7 years of age, you can gradually increase their responsibility. Children of this age are able to pour the food and water into the dishes, they can groom the pet on their own, and they can begin helping you bathe your dog by handing you the shampoo, or by gently spraying the water over the dog as you hold him still.

Once your kids reach older ages, they are able to help in many more ways. They can clean up pet accidents in the house, they can usually (depending on your child’s maturity) be responsible for feeding and watering your pooch, take him or her out to do their business in the yard, or even depending on your dog’s size and temperament, bathe them as well.

Once your kids become teenagers, they should be responsible enough to feed and water the dog, take them out on walks daily, give them baths, and they may even be able to take Fido to the vet for their annual routine check-up.

It is always a joy to allow your kids to grow up with a dog aside from giving them good memories and a better appreciation for simple things. If your children express interest in helping take care of your pet, let them! Consider the age appropriateness of their tasks, and they will love it! To young children, responsibility is fun. Use this as a learning experience, and you and your children will be able to bond with the family pet as you all bond together!
